Problem locking windows

A home owner from Apache Junction, AZ says:
We have Jordan window latches like your 90-009. Our problem is that in order to close and lock the windows, the lever must be depressed. Is this a latch requirement? Or, is this a defective latch? There are four latches which are all operating the same way, i.e., we have to depress the latch to close and lock.

It sounds like your sashes aren't meshing together correctly. Check the bottom sill and top channel for any obstruction. Also check the top and bottom sash interlocks to see if the weather stripping or something is not letting the sashes mesh and giving the lock tongue room to slide in. Another problem might be the top sash rail or bottom sash rail are bowed.
