Replacement balance tubes

Hello there. I believe we may be able to help replace these channel balances within the jamb liners, but I need more information. Can you confirm the metal channel length? Can you also show me any attachments, hooks, or shoes at both the top and bottom of the metal channel? From there we'll do our best to ID what you need. 

Thank you! Based on these new photos, my top recommendation is going to be our Series 751 channel balance. Your stamps are a little outdated, so you will need to weigh your sash on a scale to determine which of our options would be the best possibility. Otherwise, look it over and let me know if you had any questions.

One last note: you mentioned that the length for the 36XHDBB is 38.5". That's very odd. Based on that stamp, the metal channel length should only be 37". You might want to double check that to be sure.

You can't round the length up or down for these balances, unfortunately. These have to be exactly the same size as the originals; if it's too short or too long, even by a half inch, then it won't work properly.

Trouble is, I don't know if 38.5" is an length that we can provided for this. I've never seen that size for this style balance, especially with a stamp that starts with "36." That's just about unheard of.

Thanks again for your patience while I looked into this. Unfortunately, these balances are only made in full inch increments. A half inch version is not something we'll be able to supply to you.

As for whether or not a full inch length will work, either 38" or 39", I cannot say for sure, but I'm not optimistic. As I explained in my last response, it's my experience that even a half inch difference totally invalidates the use of a balance in a given application. 

You can still try the 38" or 39" lengths if you wanted to give it a shot, but I thought it'd be best if I was perfectly clear. I do not think those sizes will work in your window. Odds are whatever you have installed now was custom made for this particular application, but it's not something we can replicate.

If your sash is 20 pounds, then there is no stamp option for the S751-39 that will work properly. The absolute lowest weight this balance is calibrated to carry is 24 pounds with the 38HD option, but this is still pretty heavy. A 4 pound difference might not seem like much but you have to also keep in mind that the upper range of that stamp is 29 pounds. If you use this balance, then the sash will be very difficult to close due to how much upward force the spring is providing in relation to the downward force provided by the weight of the sash. There is even a good chance your window will open up on its own. And that's all assuming that the 39" balance will even fit, which I still don't think is in the cards.

To put it very simply: we don't sell a balance that will work for your window. I meant it when I said that the configuration you have now is very, very weird. It's just not something that's done. If I were you, I wouldn't try to make the S751-39 fit. I don't think you'll be successful. You may be better served trying to contact the manufacturer and figure out what it is they put in this window and whether they can get you an exact match. 

As for the Series 750, the difference between this and the Series 751 is that they have totally different bottom fittings. They're not interchangeable in any way. We also don't sell a 38" or 39" version of this balance, and even then you'd still run into the same problems.
