Replacement channel balances

Quick Learner from San Francisco, CA 94110
I have 2 broken sash balances on the lower sash of my old Marvin Casemaster 32 x 24 double hung window and need to replace both pieces. The part should be the Series S 751 - 25 Channel Balance. It measures 25" long, 9/16" wide and weighs 18lbs on a bathroom scale. The stamp on the side says - B.S.L. 24 - It would probably be smart to replace the whole jamb liner on both sides and the chanal balance for the upper window as well, but I don't want to remove everything if I don't have to, especially not knowing if you have the exact same part.

Let me know if you can help me.
Thanks, Paul Stein

I think I'd have to agree, it does appear that the have the S751-25. Although, it is tough to say for sure since the original balance is extremely damaged, but it does look close. There is a chance that the bottom attachment might differ from the one that comes assembled on the S751 balances.

I'd like to see the shoe without obstruction to confirm, but that would require removing the jamb. This is the best way to ensure I am giving the most accurate recommendation.

Take a look at the video below for instructions on how to remove/install these balances.

HI Jasmine,
The video does not apply to my situation because there is not screwed retainer to remove to release the channel. It has to be pried out with putty knives or something similiar, so I don't want to risk damaging it unnecessarily. I took better pictures of the "shoe" or "clutch" that should be helpful.

Please let me know how to order the two sash balances.
Thanks,
Paul

Hello, Paul. I can help you out from here, since it seems your balance might need to be a custom order. Your knife lock shoe looks to be a slightly different design than what comes with the Series 751, but on the other hand it is a little hard to tell. Seeing it out will let me know for sure.

Which brings us to the removal issue. If your jamb liner isn't held in with a screw-on retainer, then it's probably pressure fit. You will need to remove the sash and pull the jamb liner out by hand. From there, it should be relatively simple to unlock the shoe and remove the balance as per the instructions in the video above.

Once I see a clearer shot of that shoe, I can verify exactly what the configuration is and whether this is a standard product or a custom assembly.
