Retrofitting windows

Contractor from Santa Fe, NM

Hello,

I am working on retrofitting spiral balances into a set of older (circa 1920s, I believe) wood windows which are non-tilting. They previously did not have a balance system, only spring loaded pegs to hold them open, so I will be routing channels into the sides to accommodate the hardware. I would like double check that I am choosing the correct model and size of balance. Previously I have installed these in this way, but have not been the orderer of parts. My understanding is that the Series 500 will work for this use case. When selecting a tube length, I do not have an existing tube to measure, so how do I determine the best length - does it match the height of the sash, or should it be a few inches shorter? Is the #32 bracket most appropriate for mounting?

Thank you for your assistance,

Mara

I use our Series 500 spiral balance to repair wood windows all the time. I find they work incredibly well for a wide variety of windows from that era as long as you don't mind doing a bit of retrofitting, which it sounds like you already have covered. You'll need the 17-012 bracket to mount it to the bottom of the sash.

To determine size, you need to measure the height of the visible glass, then add 3" if you're working on the bottom sash or 1" if you're working on the top sash.

So for example, if the bottom sash has a visible glass height of 20", you want a 23" long balance. If the top sash has a glass height of 20", you want a 21" balance.

Hopefully that makes sense. Please feel free to reach out with any follow up questions.
