I have 15 year old vinyl tilt in windows that work very hard.they stay up or any where they stop.spiral balances look grimy greasy black.how do I know if the spiral balances are bad or if the window frame is too tight.

If your spiral balances have never been replaced, there is a good chance that they need to be replaced based on their age alone. Take a look at our video below and if you need help identifying the correct balance, please send us photos of yours fully removed from the window, as well as confirm if the diameter of the balance tube is 3/8" or 5/8".
