Sash keeps jamming

Contractor from CA
Sash is shifting to one side allowing the shoe to snap up between the sash & frame while the shoe on the other side gets pinned below the sash against the frame.

The sash width is 45-5/8" while the frame opening is 46-5/8" wide.

With 1/2" of open space on both sides I can't see how this style of shoe is supposed to keep the sash centered. See attached photo.

Hello,

I haven't seen this type of side-loaded balance used with wood windows but it should work on the same principle as vinyl and aluminum windows. I've related a few videos on the installation of side-loaded balances. The 1" gap your sash has will close when the bottom nylon shoe enters the channel cutout of the wood sash. Thanks for posting.

1) Please describe how the gap closes. 2) and how should the shoe(s) come to rest? and 3)how do I know if the existing balance is the right one for this window? Thx.

Here's more: Have you ever seen this type of balance? (See photo) These are installed thruout the home. I'm guessing the window in question was modified to accept channel balances because this type was no longer available? What do you think?

Thanks for sending over the extra photos. It looks like the former owner replaced the style jamb liner with aluminum side-loaded balances. As I mentioned, I haven't seen this set up in a wood window. To save you time and headaches in trying to get these balances to work, I would suggest removing a sash and taking it to your nearest mill work and they will set you up with a new wood sash jamb liner. Thanks for posting and good luck with your repair.
