Seeking help identifying windows balances

Quick Learner from Santa Cruz, California

Hi there Swisco,

Thank you for your help! I am looking for two window balances for a non-tilt window. The balances are about 33" long, and are 1/2 wide. They have the markings "32 5 LK CLADWELL" on each of them. The uploaded photos show both the top of the balance (with a plastic part that was in the window frame), and the bottom part with no other plastic parts. There appears to be a small block and tackle inside the balance, as well as spring. Thank you for your help! I am looking for four such balances: two to repair the window, and two more for the next time.

Hi there Sherman.

We're happy to look into this, but we'd also like to see an image of the inside of the balance’s metal channel, where the innerspring connects to the pulley mechanism; this connection is located in the middle of the channel.

Can you also measure the bottom shoe as shown below and write out what you get?

As for the top sash guide, take a look at the 18-008. Review the specifications and compare them with yours to confirm a good fit.

Hi Emily,

Thanks so much for your reply! I have measured the 18-008 piece i have, and it is an exact match. All the measurements in your diagrams correspond to the size of the one I have.

The "depth" of the bottom shoe is 1 1/4". That is the piece shown in my original photos #4 and #5. It is attached via rivets to the balance so I measured it in the balance itself.

i am uploading two more photos: one is the pulley mechanism attached to the inner spring in the middle as request, and the second is the pulley mechanism at the other end of the balance.

Thank you again for helping identify these balances. It'd be wonderful to see this window repaired and back in operation. :)

very best,

Thank you kindly, Sherman!

Based on your photos, our S385-33 with the 3250 stamp option is our best match. The depth of the shoe is 1-3/32" deep, so we recommend double-checking your measurement, just to be safe.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Emily,

I remeasured the shoe depth: it is just slightly less than 1 1/4". My tape measure doesn't have 32nd's, only 16ths, but the shoe is just shy of the 1/8" mark (upon a more accurate measurement). so it most likely is 1 3/32nds. i will place an order today for two S385-33's and two 18-008's. If they do indeed fit (and I am pretty sure they will), i'll order a second set of both parts, and just keep them handy.

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it. You'll see my order in your system in a few minutes.

Very best,

-sherman
