I have a double hung Milgard Ultra window (model 3285U), installed in 2013. Currently, I'm unable to easily tilt and remove the bottom sash, because the side locks / slide bolts don't retract all the way.
Normally, with this model, you push the sash lock/latch mechanism past the open position to retract the side locks, as in this video: https://www.milgard.com/video/how-replace-your-milgard-ultra-series-sash-lock However, the side locks only retract about half way.
To remove the bottom sash currently, I have to use a screwdriver on each of the side locks, to push them in far enough to tilt and remove the sash - which isn't easy. This problem started when I removed the window to replace coil balances (which I've now done).
When removing the sash previously, the sash gear fell out. I replaced it just by pushing the gear back into the space where it normally sits. However, I'm wondering if I didn't install the gear correctly? Any tips on how to get it back in there?
I tried removing the latch mechanism using the video link above, but was unable to pop out the latch mechanism. It seems really firmly attached to the sash - and I don't want to exert too much pressure trying to remove it. The video made that part look super easy.
Can you tell me if there's a way to fix this - or what parts are needed?
Even if no parts are needed, please let me know what replacement parts would be needed for the latch / side locks - as I'd like to have these on hand for the future.
Thanks in advance,
Zac
