Simonton window coil balance replacement

Quick Learner from Wisconsin, USA

I have Simonton replacement vinyl windows. Several balances are broken. I'm trying to identify the parts that I need.

I've uploaded the pictures of two windows. The gold sticker indicates Series 07-09 Double Hung, but on another smaller window, the white sticker it indicates something different. The coil balance and pivot shoe appear to be the same.

Any help identifying the right parts and if you sell these would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Frank

Thanks for reaching out to us, Frank. Simonton no longer makes this coil balance, but we have two possible solutions for you to consider.

The first is our 15-192 pivot shoe, along with our Series 170 coil spring (and other parts related to its store page). This is a Certainteed brand part but I have had customers in the past tell me that they got it to work after grinding down the front of the face, which sticks out just a little too far for this window.

The other option is a more modern replacement that I think works just as well, if not better, since it's not prone to breaking in half like your old one is. The video below will go into more detail. This will explain exactly what parts you need to buy and how you can install them in your window. Just note that you will need the exact weight of your sash on hand in order to calculate the proper spring strength. You want to divide that weight by how many springs support the sash, then pick accordingly.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the information. I want to purchase the S159 coil spring from the video you shared.
Can you tell me how I determine the sash weight? Is it as simple as removing the window and placing it on a scale (or use a luggage scale)?

Yes, that's exactly right. Any common scale would do, whether it's for luggage or just something you have in the bathroom.

Once you have the sash weight, the rule of thumb is to divide that by how many springs support it. So, for example, if your sash is 20 pounds and you have four springs total (or, two per side), then you would want a 5 pound option for each of the replacement springs.

Okay...so I am replacing the coils in a window sash that weighs 12.5lbs I am just replacing the coils on the lower sash - and there are two coils (one on each side). So I should select the 12.5lb option or the 6.5lb option?

My other window is 9.5lb and again two coils (one on each side). So should I order the 9.5lb or the 4.5lb coil?

Thanks for clarifying for me.

Yes, you want to split the weight between each spring. For the 12.5 pound sash, the 6.5 option should be sufficient. Same goes for the 9.5 pound sash using the 4.5. Each one is going to be a half a pound off, but honestly you shouldn't notice the difference.
