Simultaneous opening device for French doors.

Question

I have two 16" french doors that swing out. I am looking for a device that will open them both, simultaneously, when you push either the right or left door. Do you know what that device would be?

Thanks for contacting us! I have heard of double-acting French doors, but I'm not too familiar with the operation. I know at Thomas Jefferson's house in Monticello, he had a device installed under the floor. It was "a figure-8 bar-and-chain arrangement" that would activate both doors at the same time. I'm not sure if one is available as an "after market" device. Check with the door manufacturer or a locksmith in your area to see if one is available. Also check out "Monticello Explorer" and look up "Double-Acting Glass Door and Mechanism" to have a look.
