Single Hung Pella Window Balances

Home Owner from Poway, California

Resending request with photos.

I have a failed channel balance on a Pella single hung window. I need the channel balance and metal pieces that connect to the side of the window. I have 3 windows and should replace all 6 channel balances given this one failed.

The measurement of the metal section is 20.5". My guess is it is 21" given the bottom plastic piece is longer than the replacement versions on your website. The part is stamped with 2040.

Thanks for your help!

Mike

Hello,

We can supply your replacement balances but it will need to be a custom order due to the length, extended travel pulley system and unique combination of end attachments.

To get started, we'll need to see the metal clip attached to the end of the pulley clip of an undamaged balance. Also, please confirm the exact length of the metal channel, not including the end attachments, since this type of assembly would normally measure 20-5/8" long. Thank you.

Hi Casey,

On my third try (submittal) yesterday (this being my second) I finally got it right and took pictures of the undamaged clip of the undamaged channel balance following the instructions on your extended travel balance link.

Thanks again!

Mike

Thanks for getting back to us. We were able to add your additional photos to this thread and we just sent over an order link and price quote for you to review. Take a look and let us know if you need anything else.

Hello Swisco,

I have previously ordered channel balances from you. I am looking for a similar channel balance, but with more tension. So the windows do not sag as much.

Hence, 7x of the same size and dimensions; but with more tension.

We'd be happy to send you a new order link and price quote for the same custom balances that you ordered previously but we would need to know the stamp code printed on the metal channel of the balances you're replacing to determine the correct strength option.

If you suspect that the balances in the window did not have enough tension to begin with, we would need to know the exact weight of the window sash to ensure that the replacements are strong enough to adequately support the sash. Thank you.

The original balances were stamped with 2040. The first set of replacement balances you sent me were 20-4. I would like more tension weight support than this. The 20-4 balances sag a little. The original balances had too much tension, but they were rusted too; so I have no idea what they were originally like. Thanks for your help!

I'm sorry to hear that. The 2040 stamp shown in your photos would generally correspond to a 20-4 strength option for the replacement balances. If that strength option is not supporting the window properly, we would need to know the exact weight of the window sash to confirm the strength option that would support it.

Sounds good. I will measure the window when I get sometime this evening. Talk soon!

Attached is a picture of the window and the sag. It is a few inches from being fully opened. Also, I measured the weight of the window held by the channel balances and it is 23.5 lbs.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for getting back to us with your sash weight. We originally recommended 20-4 strength options based on the 2040 stamp shown in your original photos. The 20-4 balances are calibrated to support a window sash between 14-22 pounds. Since your sash actually weighs 23-1/2 pounds, that leads me to believe that your windows may have been repaired with the incorrect replacement balances at some point, assuming that all of your balances had the same 2040 stamp and the sashes all weighed 23-1/2 pounds.

If that is the case, unfortunately, we can't be sure if the balances that we can supply would work long-term since we can't be positive about what was installed originally. If there is a window in the house that you believe has the original hardware, I would recommend removing the balance to confirm that the end fittings and pulley clip match the rest of the balances in your home.

With that being said, we would still be happy to send you a new order link for the same balances with 20-5 stamp options to support a window sash between 22-25 pounds. We just want to be sure to cover all of our bases since these custom balances are non-refundable and we would hate for you to wind up with a bunch of balances that don't work properly.
