Sliding Patio Door (slides to left) and need to have key installed from exterior.

Home Owner from San Diego

Hello - We bought a home and I believe the patio door is Anderson built. We are trying to change the handle mechanism so we can have keyed access from the patio door. The photos show a front view of the latch mechanism (and you can see the exterior black handle without a key cylinder) as well as the holes in the panel. The inner handle has an integrated turn key knob to activate the latch (no separate lock). My thought was to take the exterior handle off and replace it with the part below:

82-306

Would this work?

I planned to use the existing latch since it seems similar to:

82-218

The existing assembly already has the tailpiece but it attaches to the inner handle turn knob.

Thank you.

Thanks for posting! I can't tell if the 82-306 will work for you. It's definitely compatible with your old mortise lock, but I can't tell if it will engage the thumb lever on your inside handle. You see, the 82-306 key lock is centered. You need to make sure your internal thumb lever is also centered. Those two aspects need to have the same orientation so that they can both engage the mortise lock at the same spot, from opposite sides.

As long as you can get that to work, then the 82-306 should work well for your door.

Thanks for the response. You are right. The mortise that we have is not centered for internal thumb lever. I wonder if there is another way around this? Buy a new inner handle and seal the existing openings?

Thanks

Well, we have a couple options. One I like to recommend is to use our 82-044 outside handle and 82-315 key lock. We even have a video on how these install. You'll see that the 82-044 has three positions, so you should find one to work for you.

The only issue is that these aren't available in black. The darkest color we have is bronze. Would that be okay? if so, I feel confident this hardware will work for you just as well.

Thanks! Yes I think a dark bronze will work fine!
I?ll take a look and will order once I know for sure.
