Sliding door lock won't work

A quick learner from Holtsville new york says:
Hello, I just bought a house, the back foot lock was broken, I went to Home Depot and bought a replacement lock which was 45 degree... it will only look if I have the latch out of the door before I press it down. Can't seem to figure it out. Please let me know if you can tell me which lock to order. Thank you

The lock in your photo looks a lot like our 82-218. However, I'm not sure if this is the lock you got from Home Depot or not. I can at least tell you that the 82-218 should be fully compatible with your thumb lever and handle.

Assuming you already got the 82-218 and this is what you're having trouble with, can you go into more detail on the issue you're having? I've never heard of this problem before. What do you mean when you say the latch has to be out of the door? Are you referring to the thumb latch in your first photo? How do you flip the mortise lock if the latch is out of the door?
