I'm sorry to hear the 82-218 didn't work. We haven't been able to find a version with only a 3" length. Would you be able to show us a picture of the original mortise lock? Another idea would be to use the file to shave the burrs in the opening a little to make sure it's clean and there are no obstructions. The 82-218 has a very tight fit. We've heard from many customers that it was too big at first, but once they put in a little elbow grease they found it did eventually pop in. You don't want it to be too loose. Just be very careful that it doesn't fell into the door during installation. If you haven't already, I highly recommend watching the video below if you haven't already.
