Lock is broken. The only markings I can find on door is:
ANSI Z97.1-1984
5/32" Sgcc-955
Afg c567
Bs6206a

It sounds like you need a new mortise lock. Consider either our ~~82-214~~ or 82-211, depending on the size you need. I am confident that one of these will work on your door, you'll just need to compare dimensions.

How do I measure the old latch to determine which latch I need?

Is it the width of the latch, the height or both measurements?
