Spiral Balance Inquiry

Thanks for reaching out to us. Your balance is definitely a little different than our Series 900. The main factor here is the extension of the spiral rod coming out of the bottom of the tube. Yours is longer than average, so I need to check to see if this is something we can supply.

Before I can do that, though, I will need to know how much weight the spring is calibrated to support. Our phone operators have told me that your original balance's color tip was Yellow, but reviewing your photos that does not appear to be the case. The balances in these pictures all have a white tip that's just been faded with age; yellow tips are very bright, almost lemon colored.

The bad news is that white tips are a little outdated and they don't really correspond to any modern weight option. That means that we will need you to weigh the sash on the scale and give us the precise weight, down to the ounce. Due to the special design of this balance we should probably do this anyway, just to make sure we have all our bases covered. It's always a good idea to be thorough for this kind of project, especially when you've already bought one part that doesn't work.

Thank you. Knowing the sash weight will be a huge help. I can promise you that those color tips are formerly white, not yellow, regardless of how they may look now. I am very familiar with this hardware and the color of this tip has just faded with age. 

That's not to say that our yellow tip option isn't the right option for the job, but given the circumstances it's best that we verify. The sash weight will allow us to do that beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Thanks for your patience while we looked into this. We can supply this balance, but it will have to be a custom order due to that spiral length. This is a particularly special part, too, but thankfully we have all the data we need to move forward.

Based no your sash weight, we're also going with the Red Tip color option. Two Red Tip balances in this size can carry sashes weighing 10 through 22 pounds, so it should be perfect.

Hello again! So, I'm not sure that these need to be custom made. Looking at the design is appears to be a pretty standard tilt window spiral balance. This is especially the case if the tube diameter is just 3/8", since they don't make hybrid balances this small. I would wager this is an old version of our Series 900. They used to make these with plastic tubes back in the day, but now they only do it in metal. 

If the tube is 16" then that is the length you want. The Blue Tip color option carries sashes weighing between 9 through 21 pounds.
