Spiral balance life span

A home owner from Maryland says:
I?m just curious, if there is a normal known life cycle for spiral balance in a typical home with vinyl windows? Many of the windows in our house need them replaced, mostly due to the red plastic tips being broken. They have never been abused, Possibly just the plastic aging, dunno. I?ll be ordering sometime soon.

Bob from SWISCO responded:

The life cycle for spiral balances is usually about 10-15 years. The videos below show some basic things to know about identifying replacement spiral balances, as well as how to remove and replace them.

A quick learner from Spring Grove Illinois says:
I have 6 windows that are single hung 29'' x 29'' with red tips
Will I need 2 balancer per window?
I would like to order the springs and the adjustment tool

Thank you

Yes, it would be two spiral balances per window. We can't determine what balances you need from this information alone. See the first video above. You'll need the length and diameter of the outer tube, as well as the color of the bearing that the spiral rod emerges from. For a new charging tool, see the 75-006
