Stronger Balance

I am needing replacement balances for my windows. The 15" Series 380 Channel Balance Product Code: S380-15 looks identical. However, I'm wanting one with a stronger spring. My windows weigh 19.5 lbs and when I raise them, they always slide back down a few inches. I don't see an option that would hold over 20 lbs for this, do you by chance have a different option I'm not seeing?

Thanks for reaching out to us! I agree that our S380-15 looks like a good pick, but you should check to make sure that the shoe has the same depth at 1".

As for the stamp, if your window is only 19.5 pounds then the 1460 option is exactly what you want. A stronger option won't be beneficial to you, and would actually make the operation of the window worse. The way these work is that the spring provides constant upward force that is counter-balanced by the constant downward force provided by the weight of the sash. If the upward force is higher than the weight of the sash, then it will be much harder to close. It may even drift up on its own, depending on how dramatic the difference is.

In other words, stronger isn't better. You want the spring weight to be balanced with the weight of the sash or else your window won't work properly.

Thank you for the info. I'm pretty sure it's 1" it doesn't appear to be 1 3/16" my current balance has 14 3 HP Caldwell stamped on it

I remeasured, it sure looks like 1", not 1 3/32.

I hace a 2nd window. The balance has a number stamped on it. Please see attached. Does this mean anything to you?

Sure, what that stamp tells me is that this is a very short channel balance at only 9" long, and that it has an 8-2 stamp option (ours would be 820). I can't tell you if it's the same configuration of nylon fittings, though. For that you would have to compare them to the Series 380, same as you did for the other window.
