How much of the tail piece do I cut off for a 1-1/2 inch door using the 82-086 handle

There's really no surefire answer to this. We recommend erring on the side of caution, leaving the spindle a little bit longer and testing how far you need to cut it down so it reaches the keyway, but also doesn't jam with the tailpiece on the thumb lever.
