Tilt balances

I am looking to replace the tilt balances in a number of windows. Each has a plastic cover over the balance. How do I remove the cover without breaking the channel. Or does the new balance slide inside this cover. I can move the cover a little up and down

The kind of window balance cover that you've described is force-fitting over the track and fits in a small edge groove. You should be able to pull on one side at the bottom of the cover to release it and work up the track.

Thanks for you advice and help. I was able to repair 5 windows in just under 3 hours. The biggest problem was the plastic cover. Your advice on how to remove it worked fine. The new balances work like a charm. Thanks again.
