Tilt window balance

Handy Person from Minneapolis, MN
I just purchased a home and all the windows won't stay open they just slam down. I tried to twist the balancer clockwise however they still won't hold up. I don't know if they are just that bad.

Hello there. If attempting to charge the spiral balance did not fix things, then most likely it is indeed broken and should be replaced. Measure the diameter of the outer tube to determine what balance Series you need--it will either be 5/8" and a Series 600 or 3/8" and a Series 900. You'll need to measure the length of the outer tube, up to but not including the colored tip, to choose the right length. Finally, choose the proper color option (In your case, red) to ensure the balance is the right strength. See the guides on this page for further help. Let me know if you have any questions.

Ok sounds good  it's 5/8 and 25". Would be ok if I got the blue balancer for more strength to be safe or I should be ok with the red ones?

It sounds like you have an S600-25 Spiral Balance then. Generally you want to stick with the original color option wherever possible A color rating meant for windows heavier than yours can be too strong, and thus make it difficult to close the window or keep it closed--ultimately it will break more quickly as well.
