when closing the window the worm gear and handle comes out do I only need a new cover

I'm afraid that when this occurs it means that the gears are stripped and the only solution is to replace the operator. I'd be happy to help you identify a replacement, but I will need to see the entire assembly, including the arms and any attachments at the ends of the arms.
