As you can see from the attached photos, the frame opening is 3.125

I believe your original operator is an older version that was designed differently from what's made today. You might will need to make the cut out for the operator a little larger to accommodate the newer model.

Another thought would be to make the cut out only just large enough to bring the handle side of the operator in from the outside. That way you only need to make the cut out 3-7/8" wide and could possibly use caulking to fill the gap. Then make up a type of cover plate to fill in the space.

If you are not comfortable with this kind of project, you may want the help of a local professional.
