Using jamb spreaders

A home owner from Freehold says:
Using the jamb spreaders on vynle jambs, would you recommend warming the jamb up first with a heat gun because the windows are pretty old and some of the Windows parts have become brittle from the sun and age..

Paul from SWISCO responded:
It's certainly possible, but be careful not to overheat the jambs, because they might warp.

Exactly, Paul.

A hair dryer might be better, or you could wait for a hot, sunny day. That might be best, frankly, to try to avoid stretching the frame more than needed. Just take your time, spread the track, replace the part, and remove the spreader.

That's all good advice, but I have to recommend some caution. It's possible to use a hair dryer or heat gun, and if your windows are especially brittle, then it may even be the best option available. However, it's never truly recommended, due to the danger of hurting the entire window, which costs a lot more than just the balance you want to replace! Use heat at your own risk.
