Vertical sliding window problem

Handy Person from Hawaii

Hi, I have a vertical sliding window that is about 23 3/4 X 35 1/4 inches and it won't slide upwards past about 2 inches (it seems to hit something on the left side). Hope you can help find parts to fix it.

The window has a logo on it (MM or WW or something) and numbers on the inside. The left side has a metal rail with the rope inside which is about 32 inches long and appears a little warped. It is hitting a plastic guard that slides up and down with the window.

The right side seems fine but I suspect I should replace that also if I do the left side? Do you have a video for replcaing this and taking the window out? The window is held on by a latch at the top and a bolt of some sort at the bottom and there is no obvious way to remove it. Thanks!

Hello there!

Thanks for reaching out to us. I'm a bit perplexed by what you show here. It appears that this window uses channel balances on one side and a coil balance on the other which is very odd. The balances should be the same on either side of the window. It seems that whoever installed it used whatever parts they had on hand so they could finish the job.

That makes things a little tricky since we don't know which type of balance is original to the window. Can you check a few identical windows in the house and tell us what you find? We just want to know what hardware the other windows use to see if we can narrow down the appropriate type of balance.

As for how to remove the window, we've related two videos on this page that may be of help. In order for us to identify your hardware, we'll need to see the balances removed from the window along with any attachments.

Hi, thanks for the reply! Sorry for the confusing pictures. Here are pictures of the top of the window, the top left, the top right, and the bottom left. It looks the same to me on both sides? There is a sliding piece of plastic that runs into the bottom of the metal hardware on the left which might be causing the window to stick? The window that is sticking is the inside window, not the outside one.

Also thanks for the video on how to remove it. It seems the shutters are blocking the window from being removed which is why I was confused. When I try to pull it back from the channel it hits the shutters so I suspect I have to remove the shutters first to get the window out. Hope this helps, let me know if you need more pictures!

Oh, my apologies for the confusion on my end. I thought you had two different types of balances in one window. The sliding piece of plastic you're referring to appears to be the balance cover. They're removable but it can be tricky since they're rigid vinyl. You just have to squeeze them in and pry them out. It sounds like yours may just need to be readjusted or reinstalled if that's the only problem you're having.

thanks for the response. I prob need to take the molding off so I can remove the window and see whats really happening. the metal piece with the spring and cord seems warped a bit though so maybe thats the issue. do you carry that part (the left side)? I'll try to get the window out to see whats wrong.

We may have a replacement for the channel balances but we would need to see them removed from the window along with any attachments. Let us know if that's something you can get for us!
