Weatherstripping

Home Owner from Rio Rancho, New Mexico

We have MI casement windows with severely cracked weatherstripping and would like to replace the weather stripping. I have had no luck with MI customer service, and thought you might be able to assist. Windows were probably put in 2008. I was not able to pull it out in one piece for a decent photo. I am attaching what I could get.

Bulb measures 9cm, tail measures .5cm (depth of the channel from what I can tell). It looks like there are possibly 3 "v"s on the tail made of a harder type of plastic than the bulb.

I had sent MI the serial number that was on the window, and they said they didn't make it anymore. I can't believe that it would be necessary to replace the whole window just for the weather stripping being dried out.

Your help and time is greatly appreciated!!!

I agree, you shouldn't need a whole sash just to replace the seal. We may be able to help with this, but the problem is that I can't quite make out what you have from these photos. One of the most important details is the kerf, which would more or less show me how this installs, but I can't see it as long as your seal is still installed.

Would it be possible to remove an undamaged sample and show me the end profile? I know it's very brittle, but it is necessary. If I can see the undamaged end profile, I can check our inventory for a shape that matches and installs the same way. Please let me know if you can do that for me.

I was not able to pull anything out, except the bulb portion. Leads me to think they made it that way so it can't be removed. Sigh.

Well, that is entirely possible. There are some window manufacturers that try to seal these into the window frame, thinking that you'd have to contact them directly if anything ever went wrong. A lot of companies work like that, unfortunately.

You could try making a notch in the vinyl with a utility knife and try to slide the seal out from there but I understand if that may be more work than you want to put into this at this point in time. It's not a guarantee that you can take out a whole piece, and even if you could, it's also not a guarantee that we have a match in our inventory.

If you did want to pursue that, just let me know. We're always here to assist. But we do need to see that end profile in order to make a recommendation. There's just no way around it.
