The stamp option represents how much weight your balance can support. We offer a chart on the S380-31 store page that tells you precisely how much weight is covered by each option. You can use your original stamp as a reference, but if it's too faded to read or missing entirely then the chart is a good way to verify. All you need to do is weigh your sash on a scale and look up your weight.

I'll also post our weight options here for your convenience:

  • 3010 carries 7 to 12 lbs
  • 3020 carries 12 to 16 lbs
  • 3030 carries 16 to 23 lbs
  • 3040 carries 23 to 28 lbs
  • 3050 carries 28 to 32 lbs
  • 3060 carries 32 to 35 lbs
  • 3070 carries 35 to 42 lbs

This information is based on 2 balances per sash. Balances are designed assuming friction in the jamb weather-strip will carry a portion of the sash weight. Suggested sash weights are approximate.

I misunderstood what the option meant so I installed 3050 when I should have installed 3030. I notice I do need to press down hard to close the window, but it opens easily. Will this damage anything? Do I need to redo this?

This may lead to damage later down the line, yes. With a spring that's rated too strong relative to your sash weight, the window will be overall much more difficult to close and could even open on its own. The excess force you must then use to close the window over time could lead to damage to the balances or frame itself. You should purchase a stamp option that more closely aligns to your sash weight.
