What is the screw for?

I purchased this handle but I'm curious what the screw is for? It doesn't seem to secure the handle to the operator; is it supposed to?

I have installed these types of handles in the past and never took notice of the screw at the base. I believe that screw holds the 5/16" male hex spline into the handle itself.

These types of handles were used in the older-style Roto operators. They just push into the operator. Your operator should have a black plastic collar that holds the spline stem into the operator.
