Which coils?
Thanks for reaching out to us! Your springs do appear to be 9 pounders, which means with two on each side you have a total support range of 36 pounds. If your sash is only 28 pounds then these are definitely too strong. Did you ever find that the window was hard to close in the past? If so, that'd be why.
If the window functioned normally without issue, then you may want to double check the weight of the sash just to be safe.
Regarding the best match, these have a bit of an uncommon design. Before I recommend anything, can you tell me the depth of both the pivot shoe and spring?
Hi Tom, Thanks for your note. Yes, the sash is 28# and I'm not sure if it was hard to close?? I've only ever used the windows ... You helped us replace another windows' coils and those too were very overweighted. So perhaps the folks who installed the windows were ill-advised?
By "depth" do you mean width? If so, then both are 1/2 in. I'll attach pictures so you can see what I measured. The shoe is 1 1/2 in wide by 1 in tall.
Bob recommended these replacements for our previous window:
This looks like a 15-191 Pivot Shoe, as well as 1/2" thick Series 160 Coil Balances
Not that they'll necessarily match!! But they were installed at the same time...
Thank you,
Lisa
Perfect, thanks! Yes, I agree with Bob's assessment. The 15-191 pivot shoe and Series 160 coil spring look like winners. For a 28 pound sash, I suggest using one 7.5 and one 6.5 per side. That will give you 14 pounds of support on each side, for a total of 28 pounds.
For clarity, a "sash" is the glass panel that you move up and down. Sorry for the confusion. If it was 28 pounds and your springs were rated for 32 pounds, the window ought to have been difficult to close, and may have even opened up on its own.
