Window Balance Identification

Handy Person from Houston, TX
I have three Atrium windows that need new channel balances. They are single hung with 1/2 inch balances. The balances for the larger windows are marked 21-9 KC5 CMC 87. The start of the markings on the other window is illegible because it has rusted, but what is visible is -6 KD5 CMC 69.

Thanks for reaching out to us. These balances look typical at first glance, but I note that the bottom fitting in your second image there has a bit of an odd shape. That's not one I often see on this design.

Before we go any further, can you please show me that fitting from other angles? Can you also verify the length of the metal channel in each case (or as close as you can).

Given that the stamps are faded and difficult to read, you're also probably going to want to get the exact weight of each sash. You ordinarily don't have to, since the stamps tell us what we want to know, but you aren't so lucky. Any common bathroom scale will do.

I also need to correct the size. The channel is 5/8, not 1/2. The length of the metal is 22" for the one labeled 21-9 and 16" for the other, which I think indicates the label should be 15-6.

Thanks! This is a big help. Please give us a little more time to check on this and we'll get back to you ASAP.

It looks like the Series S385 has the right dimensions, but it does not come with enough weight capacity in either the 22" or the 16" lengths. The 22" needs to be in the range 26-30 lbs and the 16" 17-22 lbs.

I agree, our Series 380 looks to be our best option. The shoe is a bit of a different design, but as long as the depth is the same I think you'll be okay.

Regarding the stamps, I really think it would be best if you gave me the exact weight of the sash in each case, down to the ounce. I'm happy to see if these larger calibrations are available, but in order to do so we need to know exactly what weights we're dealing with here. A range will not be sufficient for our purposes.
