Window Crank Issue

Home Owner from Columbus, GA
Hi,
When I turn to the right to close window the inner spindle and top nut pops out and unscrews itself. It does not come entirely out but I can screw it back in and put nut back on. It does not stay put when I turn to right to close. It will work turning left to open window. I've tried hammering that top circular piece back in but it won't stay. Any help will be appreciative since it remains open through the night.

I'm afraid there's no way to repair this. It sounds like your gears are stripped out. You may need to replace the whole operator.

Thanks for the response, but its a fairly new operator. We're talking 4 to 5 years old. What gears are you referring to? The spline screws down to tighten, and the gears seam to work opening the window. Could it be the top nut that keeps the spline down?

Here is the style

The gears I'm referring to are inside the operator. This usually happens if the handle is turned too far one way or the other when operating, which strips the gears out. This is why the operator works when you turn it to open, but not when you turn it to close; the handle was probably turned too far when the window was closed.

As for the style, it resembles a couple different operators we carry, depending on the size. See our 39-140, 39-083, and 39-015 to start.

Ok mine is 25 1/2 bracket so I will order that one. Do you have a special way to get wood trim off to get to screws? I'm not a carpenter but don't want to hire anyone. Thanks again

Sure thing, check out the video below. It features a different operator, but we show our method of removing a wood trim from a casement window. Hopefully this helps.
