Window balance question

Window channel sash balance question: Can you tell me what is the length of travel of a window channel sash balance compared to the length of the balance itself? In other words, a S351-36 channel sash balance is 36" long - what is the maximum recommended length of travel for the sash using this balance? I am considering using these balances in a custom window I am fabricating for a project I'm designing. Thanks.
