Window spring(?)

Quick Learner from Tacoma, WA
We have vinyl windows (please see photo for brand and model). With use, each of the windows loses its ability to stay open, so that we must prop it open with a 2 x 4 if we want fresh air. My husband has had to replace the part pictured here. The "spring-like-looking" part of this item imeasures about 27 inches. Can you tell me the name of this part?

Hi there!

This looks like an old rod type balance, which isn't made anymore. Before I recommend a replacement, we'll need more information.

Please remove an undamaged version of this balance and show me a clear picture of the top and bottom ends. Please also tell me the diameter of the spring. With that information, we should be able to recommend a good match.

Thanks so much!

Hi Emily,

Here are pictures that will hopefully be helpful. Please note the patent number. The diameter of the spring is approximately 1/2 inch. The weight of the window sash (?) (ie, the part that goes up and down to open and close the window) weighs about 19 to 19 1/2 pounds.

Thanks for the additional pictures and information! They help a lot.

Our Series 775 should work fine for your old rod balance. You'll need to determine the length, so be sure to  measure from the top cap to the bottom cap. You'll also need to measure your bottom wedge and weigh your window sash to choose the appropriate spring strength option. There's a chart on the S775's product page that will show you which option you'll need based on the weight of your sash.

If you have any further questions just let us know!
