Window will not close due to malfunction in Channel Balance

A quick learner from Northern Nevada says:
When I tried closing the window last night, I heard a sound, like a twang. Now the window will not close all the way...shy about 6". Took the window out today and it appears one of the mechanisms in the Channel Balance is seized up, preventing the window from closing and I cannot get the channel removed from the anchor. Looks like the rope is frayed, so, I may need to cut it to release the channel and take the anchor out. Hoping I can install the window again, until I get a replacement channel balance. The window is an H-LC25-36x48. Please identify what the replacement number for the Channel Balance is and let me know so I can order a replacement. The channel is 26" long X 1/2" wide. Thank you!!!

Please double-check the metal channel length. For a balance stamped 26-4, the metal channel is usually 27" long. Thus, this looks like either an S380-27 or S385-27 Channel Balance. The only difference between these two balances is the depth of the bottom nylon shoe, or the 'heel-to-toe' measurement. Compare both with your old hardware to see what matches best. For a new stamp option choose 2640.

I would advise against cutting the cord, as these balances hold a great amount of potential energy, and something could sling outward, possibly breaking the window or even injuring you. See if the video below on removal and replacement helps.

Thank you for the detailed response. You are correct. The channel measures 27" from end to end. I had to cut the rope. I wasn't concerned that it would snap. As I said, one if the mechanisms was frozen, so, the entire channel balance was just hanging. In order to put the window back in, I had no choice but to cut the rope. Thank you for your help. I will order a replacement channel balance based in your recommendation.
