Wood window balance repair parts

A home owner from Connecticut says:
My wife and I are renovating a house that was built in the late 40's and we are keeping the original wood hung windows. Part of the restoration will be to remove the stop trip and sand down the windows and channels. I wanted to replace the spiral balances while we have the windows apart but I'm having trouble finding what the right parts for the top and bottom and I'm unsure which balance would be best. I can take pictures if you need more detail.

Hello! That is one old house. Sounds like you have your hands full with this project.

Pictures would be a huge help, thank you. I can at least tell you off the top of my head that we like to use the Series 500 spiral balance for old wood windows, but this is just an educated guess. Let me see what you have now and I can make a more confident recommendation.

A home owner from Connecticut says:
Hi Tom! Aside from the spring balance what other hardware would I need to replace?

You'll definitely want the Series 500 spiral balance, as well as a 17-012 bracket, which will screws into the sash from underneath. These will sort of cradle it after you hook the balance onto them.

Other than screws, you'd also want a 75-005 charging tool. You want to give the new balance 2-3 clockwise turns after you install it but before you  hook it into the 17-012 bracket.
