Worn out sliding door mechanism made by Sash Controls, Ferndale, Michigan
I have a worn out latching mechanism on a Garden wire sliding door. The information on the handle is:
Sash Controls, Ferndale, Michigan on the bottom of the Handle, number 22650 on the top, the color on the handle is a bronze type finish. This door does not have a key lock.
Hello! This handle set appears to be a match for our 82-089. We currently don't have a bronze finish for this handle set, like your original, but it is available in black. Would that interest you? If not, let me know and I can see about having this made up in bronze. We can do that, but it would take about 5 business weeks before it would be available.
Your mortise lock appears to match our 82-218. I'm not sure if you also needed that, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.
Thank you for the quick response. My Handles seem to be in good shape unless the latch lever is worn out. These handles and lock have been in use for 20 + years. I might order the lock assembly and see if it works w/my handles. Any suggestions or opinion? Thank you for your help, Mitch J
20 years is pretty long in the tooth for a lockset like this, but I've seen even older parts function perfectly fine.
The most common failure point for this setup is the thumb lever and mortise. In the case of the thumb lever, it literally just falls off the handle and cannot be reattached, but that is evidently not the case here. For the mortise, the spring inside will fail and prevent the hook from moving at all when you flip it. In my experience, that's what you're going to see most often.
It's easy enough to determine whether the mortise is the culprit in this situation. While it's off the door, you can use a small flathead screwdriver to manually turn the slot in an effort to flip the hook. If nothing happens, then the spring is shot and you know that the mortise has to be replaced.
I will order the Mortise lock 82-218 and try that first before ordering the handles. Thank you for your help! Mitch J
Sounds good! Thank you kindly for the order, we really appreciate it. Let me know if you needed anything else.
