It sounds like your balances need to be replaced, which happens every 15 years or so once they get worn out. We'll need to see a picture of your balance removed from the window to recommend a replacement. 

It looks like you may have been considering the S600-29 spiral balance. If that part matches the diameter and length of your original, you'll need to choose the corresponding tip color and follow the video below for help with the installation.
