balances and shoes

Quick Learner from Cincinnati
I removed both sashes to have the glass replaced and when I tried to reinstall them the shoes are locking up and the sashes won't move up and down when placed back in. My thought is to replace the balances and the shoes (and I am not familiar with this style) but is there also something I am missing that is locking the shoes in place?

Thank you

Hello,

Take a look at our 15-048 pivot shoe and 26-028 Tamp-R-Lok. As for the spiral balances, see the 5/8" diameter S600. You might also want the 75-006 balance charging tool if you don't have one to make installation easier. Review the specifications below to confirm they match your original hardware. Thank you!

There does not seem to be an easy way to remove the plastic covers over the spring balances in the track. Is there a trick or just brute force which will probably break them?

Thanks!

In some cases, balance cocvers can be popped out with using something like a putty knife for leverage but yours appears to be flush with the track. If so, it's possible the covers may have been installed with the jamb liners. If so, you may need to remove the jamb liner to slide the cover out of the end and access the hardware.

Do you think it is a compression jamb liner that can be easily removed? I have not had to do this before.

I don't believe the jamb liner shown in your photos is intended to be removed. As Casey mentioned, these balance covers are normally designed to be popped out of the channel with a screwdriver or putty knife. If you are not able to remove yours, it would be a good idea to get a professional involved since you have a cover that is not installed in the typical fashion.
