broken coil balance spring

Home Owner from Cedar City, Utah
This looks just like the one in the link https://www.swisco.com/cl/Series-150-Coil-Balance -- no marks or numbers on it... 1/2" wide...the window is a double pane about 22 X 26". I couldn't guess what it weighs as the spring on the other side of the window is still attached. Before it broke this spring had about 15 coils... hard to count exactly because the spring is so tight. I'll need two springs.... I hope you can help!

Hello!

I agree that the Series 150 coil springs look close but I'd like to see a photo of the pivot shoe removed from the window to confirm.

As for strength, you'll need to weigh the sash on a scale and then divide the weight by the total amount of springs in the window. 15 springs for a single window is a very, very high amount and you typically only see 2-4 on a window like this; that is, 1 to 2 on each side. Just something to keep in mind.

Photos you requested. Note that there are TWO springs on this sash, one on each side. There were about 15 TURNS on each spring, then one broke. The weight of the sash with the unbroken spring still attached is 4 lbs. On your website, the series 150 coil balance comes in weights of 3,4,5,6,7,8 lbs. Since I need to lift 4 lbs, I am guessing a 4 lb spring would do the job???

I'm afraid this isn't the pivot shoe. The pivot shoe should be located below the coil springs. I'm also a bit confused about the weight you gave. Are you saying that the window sash weighs 4 pounds? Or is that just the weight for one coil spring? You can always check the band of the spring for a stamped code that would indicate the spring weight.
