I am unable to release the tension to get a better picture. I have several of these broken in my house. It attaches at the top with a philips head screw. There is one on each side of the window. Thanks for any help!

Looks like a tilt window spiral balance. I recommend either our Series 900 with a 3/8" diameter outer tube or the Series 600 with a 5/8" diameter outer tube.
