I suspect that the part in your photo may be a piece of a larger mechanism. Can you should us where this installs and how it engages with the closet door? Thank you!

yes, it contains a spring inside of it and a ball bearing on top of the spring. this piece goes into the top of a closet door and there is a catch on the door frame which the ball bearing fits into to hold the door shut. this piece screws into a hole drilled into the top flat part of the door
