coil spring replacement for double hung 18 lb 9555 window.

A quick learner from McLean VA says:
Hi Folks,
i have windows purchased in 2006 from a local building supply company. They are double hung windows model 9555. I do not have a secondary id on them beyond what is in the photo. They each weigh 18 lbs. The coil spring is on one side only. It has broken as shown. You can see in the image the broken two parts. The window will support a coil spring on both sides I believe but it currently has or should I say had only one side. Notice that the coil is attached with a single screw on one side. The width of the coil is 1/2 inch. What coil spring from you should I use?

Thanks

Dean

Hi, Dean. Your old pivot shoe looks like our 15-180, which means I recommend the Series 190 to replace your old coil springs. Please let me know if you had any questions.

Hi,

Thank you. Do I use two of the series 190, 940 9 lb version for my 18 lb lower sash or just one? If i am to use two do I underweight it by using the 8 lb version?

Thanks

Hey, Dean. There should be stamps on your old springs that you can use as a reference. If not, though, then you could use one 9 pound spring on each side. Just keep in mind that you'd also need to swap your double support for the 15-186 single support, since you're only using one spring instead of two.

If you wanted to stick with using two springs per side, then you can also go with one 5 pound spring (S190-540) and one 4 pound spring (S190-440) per side. If I had to guess, I would assume that's what you have now. That's the only way to get to 18 pounds using four springs.

A quick learner from McLean VA says:
Hi Tom,

What it had was one spring on one side. There is no number on the spring. It sounds like what you suggest is one 9 lb on each side. Is that correct?

Thanks

Dean

Gotcha, my mistake! In that case, the S190-940 should be perfect.
