do i need to relace the ballances if my window is difficult to open?

Hi, most of my windows open. Some are easier than others and some have broken balances. The ones that are difficult to open and or close is it a balance issue. The windows are about 17 years old.

It definitely sounds like you need new balances. Unfortunately, I can't identify what you have from these photos. I'll need you to remove the balance from the window and show me a clear photo of the top nylon fitting. I can see your bottom fitting clearly enough in this photo, but I don't know its size. You will need to measure its depth and tell me what you get.
