door closing and latching on its own

It is my understanding that the handle should spring back to its original position.

When the 40-028 handle is moved to open the door from either side, will the handle automatically return to its horizontal position, so that when the door closes it will hit the catch plate and actually latch? ... or does this have to be done manually so that the door will not swing open on its own?
