exterior lock Installation issue?

I installed this exterior lock on my gliding door carefully following the instructions. The keys work well. The issue I'm having, however, is that I'm unable to fully lock the door with the thumb latch. The thumb latch does not go down to the 6 o clock/vertical position; rather, it only goes to about the 4 o clock position (see photo). Did I not install the lock correctly? It seems to be fine when I remove the exterior lock completely. Help please!
