I see that you were looking at the 39-069. You'll need to remove the entire operator from the window and measure as shown below:

How is the unit removed from the window. It appears that I have to remove the wooden piece of the sash that covers the top of the lever part. Is that correct or is there a secret that I can't see?

That's correct. Take a look at the video below on casement operator replacement for wood casement windows. The hardware in this video is different, but it might give you a good idea of how you can remove the wood sill cover on top of your operator.
