replace wool weather seal on Milgard window

Home Owner from mendocino ca

Hi,

Appreciate your video tutorial on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCDAQ3Su88Y.

We have Milgard horizontal dual pane vinyl windows installed when we built our house in 2003. I can see how to remove the weather seal with a screw driver and slide it out. It appears our windows had the weather seals installed before the window frame was assembled. The corners of the window frame are all mitered joints and because of this there is a small diagonal ridge or stop so the weather seals do not simply slide out. Is the best option to trim that part of the diagonal stop or ridge to slide the old weather seal out? Also, what's the best bet on keeping the new ones from sliding around once installed, a dab of crazy glue or nail polish? Thanks, John

Hey, John! I'm glad you found our video helpful. The problem you describe is very common, so I'm confident we can help.

What I usually do is take a razor blade and make a notch at the end of the track just large enough to slide the old wool pile out. Make sure to wear gloves when you do this.

As for keeping the new pile in place, I would try it out first and put the window back in to see how it holds up. It may work fine. If you do feel like it's too lose, though, then I would just use the tiniest dab of adhesive. You don't want to use too much or else whoever has to replace it 15 years from now won't be able to. Just a dab will be fine.
