replacement pivot pin and coil balance shoe for Aurora 6000 series Tilt Double Hung

Hi There:

We have the Aurora 6000 series Tilt Double Hung and the pivot pins and the balance shoes are broken. 2 windows - a small bathroom window, and a large bedroom window. I believe I have the correct item numbers based on previous posts.

Coil Balance Shoe #15-175, Slate Blue and Pivot Bar #26-226

Do you think I need to replace everything, or do you think I can re-use the coil, bushing, barrel, etc.? On the large bedroom window, it has a double coil. Also, any idea how I can get the pivot bar out of the window, it broke off inside jut past the first screw? I have broken pins stuck inside.

Thanks for contacting us, Aaron. I agree with your assessment; our 15-175 pivot shoe and 26-226 pivot bars look like great options for your window. Now, let me address your two questions.

First, you should be able to reuse your old springs. They seem to be in pretty good condition and as long as you aren't having any issues opening and closing the window, or keeping the window open in general, then they're probably still functional. Coil balances have a lifespan of about 10-15 years depending on use.

As for getting the broken pivot bar chunks out of the sash, that's the question of the century. I find myself asking the same thing about once a month. There really isn't an easy way to do that if you can't get a good grip on it with, say, a pair of pliers. I don't even think there's a hard way, come to think of it.

But that's okay. What you can do is just push the broken pieces deeper in the frame. The channel where they install runs the entire length of the sash, so there's plenty of room. They also have a snug fit so you won't have to worry about the broken pieces rattling. My recommendation to you is to shove 'em deeper with the new pivot bar in and forget they ever existed.
