replacing old pella channel balances

Quick Learner from USA
I have several broken channel balances. Pella no longer carries. Windows installed in 1994. Original balances stamped 6040. In 2011 I replaced several balances with balances that Pella sent me that were stamped 4030 and they worked fine even though considerably shorter. Now several more of the original 6040 balances are broken and need replaced. The 4030 balances I replaced in 2011 are still OK. The cords attach to the sash by pivot pins screwed into the side of the sashes as shown in attached pictures. No special hardware on top or bottom of channel balances so I would hope that you could advise a block and tackle channel balance to replace these

I am adding 3 additional pictures to show how the cord comes out of the top of the balance and runs down in a track in the jam liner and then attaches to the side of the sash. I showed the attachment of the cord to the sash via a small pivot pin in a previously posted picture.

The windows that these balances are for are considered 44 3/4 wide by 74 inches high They are wood inside double hung aluminum clad on the outside. They are double pane with the inside pane being removable with crosses between the panes. The inner removable glass pane with its metal edge measures 40.5 by 34.5 inches The balances I want are for the lower sashes. As I recall when I replaced the 6040 balances with the 4030 balances back in 2011 I think I reused the pivot pins on the sides of the sashes and just tied the cord from the new channel spring balances to the older pivot pins on the side of the sashes

We may be able to help, but we will need more information. If possible, I would like to see a picture of the complete balance, as well any number stamped on it. Also, does the balance channel fit in the top jamb of the window, or on the side behind the jamb liner? Finally, let me know the the weight of your sash.

Hi, Paul,
It looks like you never got an answer from this customer. Sad, because these are the exact balances I have for my windows.

Pella Architect double hung windows from 1993. The balances are breaking. On the back of the balance is stamped 4030.

Here are some pics of the balances. Can you supply replacement balances for these windows? The sash weighs approx 32 pounds. The channel is 40 inches long.

What other information can I get to you?

Thanks for contacting us! Actually, in the years since we first saw this balance in this thread, we have learned that it's not something that we can replace. Our recommendation is to contact a local mill work that still makes new balances and to have them set you up with new jamb liners. We don't think you're going to find an exact match anywhere.

Same issue here: Architect Series Pella from 2001. Balance is 32 inches long, and marked "3230 B.S.I. NC". Root cause of failure is a broken sheave on the double pulley that travels along with the moving (top) end of the spring. If I could get a replacement double pulley I could re-string and repair the balance. Any ideas?

I'm afraid we still aren't able to supply this balance. It's also not possible to replace the pulley and cord, and we highly recommend that you don't try it. These are under a lot of tension and the risk of injury is significant. I suggest trying to contact Pella directly to see if they can set you up with new jamb liners.

I am having the exact same issue with several windows ( Pella designer series ) in my home. I contacted Pella to try and purchase new ballencers for my windows, that were purchased in 2001. If they would have had replacement ballences, they were going to cost $200.00 for bottom sash ballences only ,per window. After a week they let me know they no longer made replacement ballences, for my windows. Like the earlier thread mentioned, the failure is the plastic pulleys the block and tackle style, spring loaded , ballences. I believe the double pulleys could be replaced with metal ones. That would fix the ballencer. In my case the friction on the pulleys from the cord melted the plastic pulleys. So the cord rides deep inside the pulley rather than in the pulley grooveits supposed to be in. This issue is a design problem. Needless to say there is NO help from pella
