Problem solved: After I broke the latch retainer clip trying to pop it out so I could flip the latch to function from the opposite direction, I was able to use the clip from the old broken door latch to stabilize the new latch after I flipped it to operate from left to right.
Just dumb luck it all fit perfectly.
